The Srinagar Diaries

The Srinagar Diaries is a personal travel and adventure diary by Farhan Paal, documenting his journey of discovering Srinagar, not simply as a tourist, but as someone learning to experience life more fully.

The journey began in mid-2026, during a period when Farhan found himself reflecting on how he had been living. For years, much of his life revolved around studying, reading, coding, and preparing for the future. Although these things remained important to him, he gradually realized that building a future should not come at the cost of living in the present. The Srinagar Diaries became an attempt to find that balance.

Inspired partly by his reading of Che Guevara’s The Motorcycle Diaries, Farhan developed the idea of exploring Srinagar on his bicycle, which he named “Shistur Gur”, the Iron Horse. What began as an idea gradually turned into real journeys through roads, lakes, gardens, villages, mountain paths, and unfamiliar parts of the city and its surroundings.

The chapters capture a variety of experiences: spontaneous swimming trips, long cycling journeys, mountain expeditions, unexpected detours, conversations with friends, encounters with local places, physical exhaustion, laughter, mistakes, and moments of quiet reflection.

Some journeys are carefully planned. Others begin with nothing more than a simple question: “Where should we go?”

One day may lead to a swimming pool in Haariwan. Another may turn into a 28-kilometre cycling expedition reaching around 1900 metres, while another unexpected evening adventure can lead to the mountains of Fakir Gujri at around 2200 metres.

But this book is not only about destinations.

It is also about friendship and camaraderie. Many of these journeys were made possible by Farhan’s friends, whose personalities, conversations, decisions, struggles, and companionship become an important part of each chapter.

It is about discovering what lies beyond familiar routines. It is about realizing that a journey does not have to be extraordinary to become a memorable part of your life. It is about choosing the unexpected sometimes. And ultimately, it is about learning to live.

The book also contains maps and routes of the journeys, allowing readers to follow the paths taken during these explorations and, perhaps, discover some of Srinagar for themselves. A Living Book

The Srinagar Diaries is not complete yet. This is intentional.

The book is an ongoing record of a life in progress in srinagar. As Farhan continues exploring Srinagar, meeting people, taking new journeys, and creating new memories, more chapters will be added to the book.

So what you are reading today is only the beginning.

The diary will continue to grow journey by journey, chapter by chapter, memory by memory.

The book does not represent abandoning Farhan’s old life. Reading, coding, studying, building a career, and pursuing his ambitions remain part of who he is. Instead, the diary represents an attempt to add new experiences to that life and create a better balance between building a future and actually living in the present.

Fasten your belt and come explore Srinagar with me. Every chapter is another journey on Shistur Gur.
